Videogames may well come under fire on a regular basis, but they can be as beneficial for your child’s education as anything else. As they say – all things in moderation. So, I went off and checked out several different PC games that have been designed for children and found five that fit the preschooler bill.

Oh, and all these games will grow with your tots so they should keep them entertained for several years. Who says that the consoles are better? Not me!

1. World of Zoo

Designed for kids aged three and up, World of Zoo will happily run on a netbook as well as a hefty PC although expect some speed issues on the former. The features that best suit the younger kids are the Animal Creator – where they can create all sorts of animal without fear of making a mistake – and the fun facts imparted via National Geographic.

2. Crayon Physics

Have you ever wanted to be able to draw for hours and not waste paper, make mistakes and then get rewarded? Well, yes, we all do! This game is great for little uns, especially to teach them mouse control and cause and effect. And they get to explore their creative side.

3. The Littlest Pet Shop

I’m sure you’ve seen the toys at your local retailer? These little pets and their accessories selling for silly amounts of cash? Well, this is the game that has come about as a result of the success of the toys, a simple PC game that is for the younger kids. Kids earn new pets by completing minigames and can spend happy hours designing and dressing their pets.

4. 10 Games for Kids

If you don’t fancy any of the more fun-centric titles, how about this whopper? Here you get ten games in one box and they have all been designed to educate and advise. From maths to English, writing to spelling, the games cover all the educational bases. This is one title that lets you drop the guilt…

5. MySims

The successful PC gaming franchise has been adjusted to create a whole new generation of Sim addicts. EA has created a title that’s utterly perfect for younger kids alongside several safety extras and layers of protection for little minds. This will probably have parents as addicted as their kids and is great for teaching online socialising, mouse control, and creativity.
